Judge Pro Tem

Charles M. Riffle has served as Judge Pro Tem for fifteen years, mostly in family law, for the Superior Court of San Mateo County, California. From time to time, attorneys will recommend to their clients that they stipulate (agree) that an experienced attorney act as a Judge of the Superior Court in a litigated matter. The advantages of such a plan include the immediate availability of the attorney to rule on disputed discovery matters, the greater ease of calendaring hearings and the trial in the case, the use of one judge to hear all issues in the case, and the substantially reduced chance of expensive continuances. The sole disadvantage of such a plan is that the litigants must share the cost of the judge pro tem. However, the cost of a private judge pales in comparison to the cumulative costs of the attorneys for the parties in waiting for courtrooms to become available.

Mr. Riffle is one of the most seasoned pro tem judges in San Mateo County, and has experience in family law, probate, and general civil law. The breadth of his expertise, his well-recognized even temperament, and his decisiveness make him an excellent choice to serve as private judge in many disputed matters.
